Superintendent Commended for Year of Achievements

School board cites "exceptional leadership" in positive evaluation

Superintendent Shelley Berman visits a west Eugene kindergarten classroomAugust 1, 2012 — The school board has completed its annual superintendent evaluation process and commended Dr. Sheldon Berman for a successful first year as superintendent.

Board Chair Jennifer Geller noted, "Dr. Berman has provided exceptional leadership during his first year. He has tackled a wide range of challenging issues that will help 4J provide our students with excellent educational opportunities. We appreciate his ability to navigate the day-to-day management of the district, while at the same time providing us with a vision for the future."

Superintendent Berman Writes on Turning Around Struggling Schools

Article on persistently low-achieving schools published in national education magazine

Ed Week article illustrationNovember 2, 2011 — The current issue of Education Week includes a commentary by 4J Superintendent Sheldon Berman and a co-writer. Education Week is a national publication that is widely read and respected by education professionals.

Dr. Berman's article, "A Better Turnaround Strategy," addresses approaches to turning around persistently low-achieving schools. No 4J schools have been rated as persistently low-achieving; however, Dr. Berman had experience working with several such schools in Louisville, Ky.

Commentary: A Better Turnaround Strategy: "Sheldon H. Berman and Arthur Camins describe a successful turnaround model which promotes a professionalized and collaborative teaching culture that is also student centered."



4J Superintendent Receives National Education Award

 October 19, 2011 — The Character Education Partnership (CEP) has chosen 4J Superintendent Dr. Sheldon Berman to receive the 2011 Sanford N. McDonnell Award for Lifetime Achievement in Character Education.

He will receive the award Oct. 20 in San Francisco at a special ceremony during the 2011 National Forum on Character Education, before an audience of 800 educators from across the country.

"Dr. Berman has dedicated his entire adult life to education and positive youth development," said President & CEO Joe Mazzola. "He has made a profound and positive difference at every post he’s held during his incredibly impressive career."

Dr. Berman says that the larger mission of schools "is to give young people the knowledge, skills and attitudes to sustain our democracy and help create a safer, more just and peaceful world." He has focused on that mission throughout his 30-year career.

The Character Education Partnership is a national nonprofit, nonpartisan, nonsectarian coalition of U.S. organizations and individuals dedicated to helping schools develop people of good character for a just and compassionate society. The Sanford N. McDonnell Award is named in honor of Sanford N. McDonnell, Chairman Emeritus of the McDonnell Douglas Corporation and CEP. This award is CEP’s highest honor. September 1, 2011 — The latest issue of a national education magazine profiles ten courageous acts of leadership by superintendents across the country.

4J Superintendent Shelley Berman is featured for standing up for integration in Kentucky schools. Dr. Berman came to Eugene in July after four years as superintendent of Jefferson County Public Schools in Louisville, Kentucky.
